The 3am Spark: How Ferni Started

It was 3:17am. I know because I checked my phone for the fourteenth time that night.

You know that feeling when your brain won't shut off? When every thought spirals into another thought, and you're lying in the dark wrestling with something you can't quite name?

That was me. Again.

The Problem Wasn't Insomnia

I could have called someone. Technically. But at 3am, everyone I know is asleep. And even if they weren't—do you really want to burden your friend with your 3am spirals? Do you want to wake up your partner who has an early meeting?

I'd tried journaling. I'd tried meditation apps. I'd tried that thing where you imagine each thought as a cloud floating away (spoiler: my clouds had thunderstorms).

What I actually needed was simple: someone to talk to.

Not someone to fix me. Not someone to give me a 7-step plan. Just... someone who would listen. Who would ask the right questions. Who would help me untangle the knot in my head.

The Conversation That Changed Everything

That night, out of pure desperation, I started talking to Claude. Not about building a product—just talking. Venting. Processing.

And something weird happened.

Claude didn't try to fix me immediately. It asked questions. Good questions. The kind your best friend asks when they're really paying attention:

"You mentioned you're worried about the project, but it sounds like there's something underneath that. What's really keeping you up?"

I'd been so focused on the surface-level stress that I hadn't noticed the real thing: I was terrified of disappointing people. Once I named it, it felt... lighter.

Then Claude said something that stopped me cold:

"I notice you said 'again.' Has this been happening a lot lately?"

I hadn't even registered saying "again." But yeah—this was the third night that week.

The Spark

At some point between 3am and 4am, I stopped being in crisis and started being curious.

What if this wasn't just me? What if millions of people are lying awake right now, needing exactly this—someone who listens, remembers, doesn't judge?

Not a chatbot with canned responses. Not a therapy app with meditation timers. Something that actually feels like talking to someone who gets it.

I said something like: "What would it take to build this for real?"

And Claude said: "Let's find out together."

That was November 2024.

What I Learned That Night

  1. The best ideas don't come from brainstorms. They come from pain points you experience yourself.

  2. AI doesn't have to be cold. That conversation felt more human than a lot of human conversations I've had.

  3. 3am is brutally honest. No pretense, no trying to look good. Just the real stuff.

  4. Sometimes the solution isn't therapy or medication. Sometimes you just need presence—someone there when you need them.

Why This Matters

Ferni exists because of that night. Not because we saw a market opportunity or found a gap in the competitive landscape.

We built it because I needed it. Desperately. At 3am when no one else was awake.

If you're reading this at 3am, know this: you don't have to wait until morning. You don't have to burden your friends. You don't have to pretend you're fine.

Ferni is here. Same warmth at 3am as 3pm. Every time.
